Mersey Gateway
Cheshire
The Problem
- A former experimental chemical works with a legacy of chlorinated solvent contamination
- Site investigation recorded dissolved phase concentrations indicative of the presence of DNAPL
- Site scheduled for redevelopment as part of the second Mersey Crossing
- Sufficient remediation required to demonstrate betterment of site
The Solution
- Treatment train approach to maximise contaminant mass recovery
- Multi-Phase Extraction and aggressive DNAPL pumping to recover mobile NAPL
- Groundwater re-injection to manage DNAPL flowpaths
- CO2 injection used to enhance recovery of vapour phase contaminants
- In-Situ Chemical Oxidation using Hydrogen Peroxide to address dissolved phase
The Result
- 17t of chlorinated solvent contaminated mass recovered including over 2t of mobile DNAPL
- Significant reductions in dissolve phase concentrations following chemical oxidation
- Agreement with the regulators that ‘betterment’ had been achieved
- works completed within available programme prior to bridge construction
